Effect of CBD oil for cats and dogs

The use of CBD oil is said to have an influence on the endocannabinoid system in the human body. Such an endogenous cannabinoid system has also been demonstrated in animals.

CBD (cannabidiol) is a cannabinoid that can interact with this system. It has so-called cannabinoid receptors to which the CBD can dock. The cannabinoid receptors are located throughout the body. CBD is generally absorbed via the dog's mucous membranes, but can also enter the body via application to the skin. Here it is transported through the bloodstream to the cannabinoid receptors.

CBD oil does not have an intoxicating effect on dogs (as it does on humans and cats). Pet owners therefore have nothing to worry about, as CBD oil does not get the animal high. Although high-quality CBD oils, so-called full spectrum CBD oils, also contain THC, the THC content is below the permitted amount and can even enhance the overall effect of the CBD oil. Dosage and use of CBD oil for cats and dogs

Like the human body, the animal body also absorbs cannabidiol individually. This is why the dosage should also be individualized. It is recommended to start with a low dose. If there is little or no effect, the dose can be increased to a higher number of drops. This allows the tolerance of the oil to be monitored. Of course, the use of CBD does not work miracles and is not always effective. Unfortunately, there are still very few studies that have investigated the use of CBD oil in dogs and cats.

Terpene-free CBD oil for cats

Full spectrum CBD oils often contain all the important cannabinoids, flavonoids and also terpenes. While this full spectrum of the hemp plant is very suitable for humans, the terpene content can be dangerous for cats.

Cats do not tolerate terpenes. As the animal's metabolism cannot break down terpenes, they remain in the cat's body for longer and can lead to poisoning. This can be life-threatening. A distinction should therefore be made between oil for personal use and oil for pets.

Disorientation, motor disturbances or a high level of salivation can be the first signs of terpene poisoning. This should be clarified with the vet as soon as possible.
